Station Footprint Comparison

Small PRT Stations fit neighborhoods better than large Train Stations

About the comparison. The footprint comparison for the neighborhoods at left are based upon train station sizes of the actual Alweg monorail system or Sound Transit planning documents, as shown below.

Personal Rapid Transit. The PRT station footprints depicted in each comparison are for a 3-berth station approximately 50 feet in length, as designed for the proposed Rosemont, Illinois PRT system. PRT stations can be this small because on-demand service means there are no crowds needing large areas in which to wait.

Light Rail. This is from Sound Transit's description of the proposed Edmunds Street station in Rainier Valley. The length of the station as depicted here is approximately 325 feet. Station size is a function of the number of people that might catch or disembark from a train at one time (several hundred), and the length of the longest train.

Monorail. Below is an aerial photo of the Seattle Center, the Alweg monorail station is the white rectangle just below center. The Space Needle is at bottom, Experience Music Project is at right. Dimensions of the station are approximately 175 ft x 75 ft. Again, station size is a function of the number of people that might catch or disembark from a train at one time (several hundred), and the length of the longest train.
